Clothing poverty, or clothing insecurity, is a situation 2 out of 5 children face across America daily. People experiencing clothing insecurity lack seasonally appropriate, correctly sized, or clean clothing. It can lead to struggles in school or the work force, ultimately having a negative impact on both mental and physical health. At Carrie's Closet, we work to combat this growing need across the state of Georgia.
Carrie's Closet was founded in 2015. Our mission is to clothe and impact the lives of Georgia’s most vulnerable and at-risk children through service and advocacy. Our vision is to ensure that no child looks like the trauma they have endured and experienced.
Our founder and executive director, Mamie Harper, explains the mission, inspiration, and service of Carrie's Closet in this Ted Talk: Clothing: The Forgotten Human Right.
In Georgia, children removed from their homes have no legal rights to their possessions. This means that some foster children come into care with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This creates a financial burden on the foster families and contributes to secondary trauma that the foster children have to endure. Children in the juvenile justice system, LGBT+ youth, and refugee children also have needs that are not being met within our current system.
We responded to these needs by establishing mobile clothing closets in the metro Atlanta area. This helps children who may be without the items they need to live safe and healthy lives. We bring clothing to them to reduce stress on both children and on their caregivers.
We recognize the need to address challenges at the systemic level to create lasting change. That's why Carrie's Closet is dedicated to advocating for a Foster Child Bill of Rights in Georgia.
Your support enables us to meet the needs of foster children in your community. Thank you for making a difference!
